2004 | ANDREWS, Fred | Fred’s playing days concluded in 1980. In 1982 he became involved in the Management Committee when John Mulford became President. In 1983 he took over Colts, coaching in what became known as the Golden Age of Drummoyne Colts. Moved up to the senior grades in 1987 and took over 1st Grade in 1989. His team won ten of their last 11 matches including a memorable victory over Minor Premiers, Norths. Fred then formed a close coaching alliance with former First Grade and Club Captain Peter McSullea, which took the club into the nineties and eventually back into First Division. In more recent years, Fred has been the cornerstone of the re-birth of the club in the NSWSRU as both as a Grade Coach and Club Coach. |
1978 | AULAND, “Bunky” * | One of Drummoyne’s great players, member of the 1936 First Grade Premiership team. A rugged, uncompromising tight head breakaway, he was to chosen to play for NSW against the All Blacks and from all accounts, gave them plenty. Club President from 1968-1970, then again 1973-75, he was our Patron 1976 – 1994. His great loves were running the weekly raffle and organizing the car park. |
1957 | CORAM, Ted | The loss of an eye curtailed Ted’s playing career which began in several outstanding DDRFC junior premiership teams of the thirties. Became the Hon Secretary during WWII, a difficult time when players, officials and referees were in short supply. For 10 years he was the Club delegate to the NSWRU, member of the important Schools’ Committee of the NSWRU. Referee, and for many years the Club’s touch judge. His other posts were Social Secretary and selector. Maintains a strong interest in the Club and in the players, particularly the Drummoyne Juniors. |
1986 | CRAWFORD, Alan * | A player in the strong 1930’s era, Alan was on outstanding RAAF bomber pilot during WW11, completing 55 bombing missions over Germany. Mentioned in despatches 3 times for getting his burning plane home and being awarded the DFC. Returned home in 1945 to work hard for his old club over many years in many capacities: selector, coach. Secretary in 1971, then back in 1983/1984. Every Monday night for the seasons 1947-1985 he attended as our delegate to the meetings of the NSWRU Grades Committee. |
2002 | DAY, Bob * | Long-time mate of Arthur Tierney, uncompromising eighty minute player from the forties and Assistant Commissioner of NSW Police, Bob dedicated many years to his old Club as Secretary from 1989 to 1996, as a selector and delegate. He fought hard for the Club’s return to First Division. A great swimmer in the World’s Master Games, Bob encouraged the game of Rugby within the Police Force and tours, both outbound and inbound around the world. |
1992 | DYER, David * | A fine player for Drummoyne Juniors and then in the senior grades, David extended his playing career after retirement in the Fifties by being available at call whenever a player went missing, no matter which team. He would then back up by running the line for first grade. What a clubman! With his financial expertise and wise counsel, he was an outstanding Club Treasurer from 1982 to 1991. Together with his wife Robin, now a Vice President of the Club, he kept the Club afloat through tough times. |
2008 | FACEY, Charles * | Joined the Club in 1957 playing at outside centre or wing. Of his 135 Club games, 114 were in First Grade. He scored many tries and defended strongly. Following retirement in 1966 he served variously as a selector, coach of the Juniors and Management Committee member. Continues loyal support. |
1978 | FIRTH, Graham * | Became involved with the Club for the very best of reasons …. his sons Bernard and David and son-in-law David Dyer were all keen players. A superb organizer, he was a splendid Club Secretary from 1961-1970 and then President 1971-2. He was a well respected member of the Committee of the Sydney Rugby Union. |
1933 | GROSE, Harry * | Captain Balmain DRFC 1911-13, fullback and centre. Secretary of Balmain DRFC from 1914-1919. Instrumental with Dr H Moran, in merging the Glebe and Balmain Clubs in 1919. Appointed Life Member of NSWRU in 1940. President of DDRFC from 1940-1951….Patron from 1953-1975. |
1938 | GROSE, Syd * | The earliest photo we have of Syd is in a match played by a Drummoyne touring team against Duntroon Military College in Canberra, dated 1922. The last is one taken with Syd, in full Vintage Reds gear, kicking off in the 1983 Golden Oldies, aged 83. All those intervening years he was a committed Red, first grade player, first grade referee, selector, coach & NSWRU delegate. You name it, Syd did it. |
1961 | HIATT, Dr Les * | The Club’s long serving medical officer 1946-1959. Many of his stitches are still in place. |
2008 | JOHNSTONE, Brian | Joined the Senior Club at the end of the 1952 Junior Club season, playing in the backs as a half, fly half or full back until 1966. His 239 games for the Club included 73 in First Grade. He became the Club’s delegate to the Sydney and NSW Rugby Unions and served on the Executive Committees of those Unions and of the Australian Rugby Union during the period to 1985. Was elected Club President in 1987 and 1988 and continues strong support in all the Club’s deliberations. |
2002 | LANGDON, Betty * | Who could ever forget those 26 years Betty and her ladies ran just the best Rugby Kiosk in Sydney! Initially with quite primitive facilities, Betty’s cups of tea revived many a flagging player, as did her spirited words of encouragement. A great collaborator with husband Sep as Secretary and then President, their home was the heart of Drummoyne Rugby for nearly 3 decades. |
1972 | LANGDON, Sep * | Began his long career with the Club as the first grade team manager, then became our outstanding Secretary 1950 –58. He was a highly popular Club President from 1963-67, always there with calm counsel and a personal interest in the well being of all players in every team. See later notes on the great partnership he formed with his wife Betty, also a Life Member. |
2008 | McKENNA, John * | Joined the Club in 1957 as a versatile flanker or fly half. All his 18 First Grade appearances out of a total 123 Club games were as flanker. After retiring in 1966 , he coached to Reserve Grade level, taking the 1966 team to a grand final. Served for many years on the Management Committee where his legal knowledge and experience, particularly with regard to constitutional matters, were very useful over the years. Also the co author of the Club’s song “We are the Dirty Reds” … with Bruce Rollo in 1971. |
1994 | MILES, Max * | Fine first grade centre, Captain/Coach and lock forward in the Fifties, he was the backbone of the Club’s on field efforts and was very unlucky not to have been selected for higher honours. He was the Club’s Honorary Solicitor for many years and gave distinguished service in that role also to the NSWRU and the Australian Rugby Union. A true Rugby man |
2008 | MILLAR, Hunter | Came to the Club in 1954 and played in the Premiership winning reserve grade team that year (Colin Caird Shield) & retired in 1962 after a broken leg. 1989 | MULFORD, John * | Captain of the Red’s State junior undefeated Premiership teams of 1947-8 and the Combined State U21 team. Played in the First Grade team 1949-52 and then became a first grade referee. President of the Club 1982-87. 2002 | STEPHENSON, Roy * | A great Club stalwart, whose 3 sons, Barry, David and Michael have themselves given great service to the Club. He spent his young days growing up in Cometrowe Street, adjacent to the Oval. Always a strong debater on issues vital to the club, perhaps Roy’s most notable contribution was the organizing of that superb Testimonial for the Club’s great Australian Captain Greg Davis, whose death at a relatively young age left a young family in need of support. Roy mobilized the support of the whole Australian Rugby community and raised a large sum for a Foundation which provided for Greg’s young family and educated the children |
1957 | TANCRED, Arnold * | Strong back rower in the Club’s Premiership team of 1925, became a Waratah and Wallaby in 1927/8. Highly respected in the administration of the NSWRU. 1996 | TIERNEY, Arthur * | Our first grade hooker and front rower of the early forties, Arthur became one of Australian Rugby’s most respected and loved characters. He refereed 140 first grade games and topped his career with the whistle by being appointed to referee the Test between Australia and the British Lions in 1959. Following his retirement, he became the Club’s long serving timekeeper. He overcame a speech impediment with some classical one-liners which are still quoted by Wallabies and Reds around Australia. |
2008 | WINES, Ken * | Ken (and wife Betty) has been an extremely hardworking and dedicated member of DDRFC. Played with the Club in the 1940’s & Captained the Club’s 1947 Kentwell Cup Sub Districts winning team. When he retired, he went on to became a 1st grade referee. Club Secretary from 1985 to 1987. Awards
Drummoyne Rugby has a rich history and Drummoyne Rugby Awards those who contribute to the club, both on and off the rugby field with our annual awards.
Most Successful Team (Vince O Gorman Shield)
Presented to the most successful team of the season. Awarded since 2000 and named after Vince O Gorman, who was a member of the 1936 Drummoyne team which won the Shute Shield. An outstanding centre and eventual club selector, Vince always remained in touch with the club, and was regularly seen at Drummoyne Oval until his death at the age of 98.
Voted by: Club Committee.
President’s Player (Ian Gordon Memorial)
Presented to the player that the President feels deserves recognition for his consistent work on and off the field. Awarded since 2000 in memory of Ian Gordon who was a first grader during Drummoyne’s golden era in the 1950’s, and then President between 1988-1992.
Voted by: The Club President.
Players Player (David Dyer Shield)
Presented to the player nominated by all players and coaches as the Players Player. Awarded since 2001 and named after David Dyer, who was a fine player for the club during the 1950’s. He became Drummoyne’s Honourable Treasurer from 1982 to 1992 and refereed regularly from 1970. David’s wife Robyn was also revered, having run the canteen for 20 years, a true club family.
Voted by: Players, Coaches and Committee. In the case of a tie, the Executive Committee will appoint a winner.
Rookie of the Year
– Awarded since 2000 to the most outstanding newcomer in his first year at Drummoyne
Voted by: Coaches and Committee. In the case of a tie, the Executive Committee will appoint a winner.
Cattle Dog (James Garraway Award)
– Awarded to the player whose character traits most resembles a cattle dog; loyal, hard working, never taking a backward step. They’re not flashy or the best player, but always happy to play multiple games on a Saturday and do it for the love of the game and club, without the need for recognition. Awarded since 2012 and donated by James Garraway, who describes what this award means with these words:
“He has no lineage or credential to brag of but has the nobility of the mongrel breed. He is not hedonic or a honed & oiled gladiator – but he will not shy away from a scrap. He won’t be found in the mansion or in the penthouse – you will find him by the BBQ. He sneers at the speed and grace of the thoroughbreds – yet he will always be “thereabouts” somehow. He won’t be the one to hold the prize aloft, or be posturing for the lens – but no one else can do so without him. His dues are paid in blood, his position is earned in sweat, there’s pride in the dust of his coat and his toil is as real as it is both unnoticed and ever-present. But above all; the Cattle Dog does not stop. He just keeps on until there’s nowt left to do. And he will do all as & when asked and his reward is the joy in the game itself.”
Voted by: Coaches.
Chris Noble Award
Awarded to the player who puts the most effort into their training and shows unrivalled commitment. Awarded since 2014 in memory of Chris Noble, who tragically lost his life in the Rozelle fire, which claimed three lives.
“The late Chris Noble trained like an athlete who loved rugby. He might not have been the most gifted player, but a more dedicated trainer you could not meet. No complaints, he did the hard work and it often showed in the way he defended on the field. But above all Chris was a club man. To him playing the game meant a commitment to training, the match and getting to know his team mates better post game”.
Voted by: Head Trainer and Club Coach.
Overall Best & Fairest (Greg Davis Award)
Presented to the player who overall earns the most Best & Fairest points for the season. Awarded since 2010 and named after the late Greg Davis, a former Drummoyne Rugby captain, and Wallaby captain, and one of Drummoyne’s favourite sons who was recognised in the naming of the Drummoyne Oval Grand Stand completed in 2013.
Voted by: Coaches and Committee. In the case of a tie, the Executive Committee will appoint a winner.
Clubman of the Year (Keith Ellis Plaque)
Presented to a member of Drummoyne who is deemed to represent the best of what it means to DDRFC Club member, be it a player or volunteer. Awarded since 1989 and named after Keith Ellis who started his playing career at Drummoyne in the lower grades before becoming a Wallaby. ‘Bluey’ Ellis was a tough, barrel-chested prop and his distinctive red hair, which meant he generally always came in for special attention from the opposition. Keith was also a long-time club selector throughout the 1980’s.
Voted by: Coaches and Committee by anonymous vote to the Patron.
Most Offside Forward (George Knapton Award)
– Presented, tongue in cheek, to the forward who has been caught offside more times than any other throughout the season. Awarded since 1978 and named after George Knapton who spent most of career offside and in search of the coldest beverage available.
Voted by: Previous winner.
